Deep clean vs. regular cleaning: difference, price, and when you need what

Regular cleaning keeps your everyday life clean – dust, floors, bathrooms, and kitchens, what you see and touch. Deep cleaning tackles what regular cleaning never reaches: behind the stove, inside the oven, limescale in the shower, baseboards, door frames, and the tops of cabinets. A deep clean typically takes three to five times as long as a regular clean of the same home, and costs accordingly. Here's the difference, 2026 prices, and when you actually need what.

What does a regular clean cover?

Regular cleaning is maintenance. It's the rounds you do every week or every other week to keep your home fresh, and what cleaners call regular cleaning when you have a contract.

What's actually included depends on the service you order. This list is a typical starting point, not a definitive guide. Some tasks – such as cleaning the oven, windows, balcony, or appliances – may be extras you need to order separately and are not automatically included in all assignments. What applies to your assignment will be stated in the quote and order confirmation. If you are unsure if something is included, ask us before the cleaning day.

A typical regular clean includes:

  • Dusting of accessible surfaces you can reach without moving heavy items
  • Floor washing and vacuuming
  • Bathroom: sink, toilet, shower, and mirror wiped down
  • Kitchen: countertops, hob, and exterior of cabinets and appliances
  • Emptying of trash

The point of regular cleaning is to maintain the level, not to reset it. If you want to know how often you should clean different rooms, we have a separate guide on how often you should clean your home.

What does a deep clean cover?

Deep cleaning tackles what regular cleaning skips because it requires time, moving things, and effort. You pull out the stove, you tackle the limescale, you clean places no one sees daily.

A deep clean typically includes:

  • Behind and under the stove, refrigerator, and other movable furniture
  • Inside the oven and extractor fan, with proper grease removal
  • Limescale in the shower, on fixtures, and tiles – see our guide on removing limescale in the bathroom and shower
  • Baseboards, door frames, window frames, and the top edge of doors
  • Inside of cabinets and drawers
  • Tops of tall cabinets, lamps, and vents
  • Window cleaning, often both interior and exterior

Think of it this way: regular cleaning keeps the home at a certain level, deep cleaning brings it back up to where surface cleaning doesn't reach. Limescale, grease, and dust on top of cabinets build up no matter how diligent you are weekly. That's why most people need a deep clean occasionally.

When do you need a deep clean?

You need a deep clean when the buildup has gone too far for regular cleaning, or when an occasion requires the home to be thoroughly clean from the ground up. Common situations:

  1. Spring and autumn cleaning, what we traditionally call a deep clean
  2. Before or after a big event – confirmation, Christmas, long-stay guests
  3. When you take over a used home and want to start from scratch
  4. After renovation, when construction dust has settled everywhere
  5. If you've let regular cleaning slide a bit too long and the bathroom or kitchen has developed buildup

A simple sign: if you dread pulling out the stove, it's probably time.

Move-out cleaning, deep clean, or deep clean – what's what?

The three terms are often mixed, but they have different goals. Here's the difference summarized:

TypeWhenGoalWho determines the scope
Regular cleaningEvery week / every other weekMaintain the levelYou, as needed
Deep cleanA couple of times a yearReset what regular cleaning doesn't reachYou, free choice of rooms and depth
Deep cleanSpring and autumnTraditional seasonal cleaning of the entire homeYou, but often the entire home combined
Move-out cleaningUpon moving in and outDeliver the home empty and ready for the next occupantStandard many real estate agents and landlords expect

A deep clean is practically a deep clean with a seasonal aspect. Move-out cleaning is what stands out the most: it's done in an empty home, according to a known standard, and the goal is for the next occupant or landlord to approve it. If you're moving, you should read about what move-out cleaning costs before ordering, and use a move-out cleaning checklist so nothing is missed.

What does a deep clean cost in 2026?

The prices here are approximate starting points for 2026, not a binding quote. The cost of the assignment depends on size, condition, and accessibility. You will receive the final price in a specific quote from us – and it is often higher than the lowest estimate. Request a quote for a price that actually applies to your home or premises.

As a market estimate for 2026, a deep clean often costs NOK 2,500–6,000 for a typical apartment, and higher for larger homes or when limescale and grease have been left for a long time. Regular cleaning of the same home costs a fraction, because it takes a fraction of the time.

The difference is about hours, not magic. A rough picture:

HomeRegular cleaningDeep clean
Small apartment (under 50 m²)NOK 700–1,200NOK 2,000–3,500
Apartment 50–90 m²NOK 1,000–1,800NOK 3,000–5,000
House / larger homefrom NOK 1,800from NOK 5,000

The ranges are estimates, not a quote. They depend on condition, number of bathrooms, and how much needs to be moved.

Why you should be skeptical of the lowest prices

Here comes the honest part. The wage floor in cleaning is generalized: the minimum wage for adults is NOK 236.54/hour from June 15, 2025, and for under 18 years it is NOK 185.55/hour. That's just the wage. On top of that comes employer's national insurance contributions, holiday pay, insurance, equipment, transport, and the company's own costs.

Calculate it yourself: an hour of cleaning costs a serious company far more than NOK 236.54 paid to the worker. When someone offers you a deep clean at an hourly rate that barely covers the minimum wage, it's a red flag. Either the worker is paying the price, or it's undeclared work. The latter is not a bargain – it's a risk you bear.

It is also illegal for private individuals, not just businesses, to purchase cleaning services from a company not registered in the Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority's Renholdsregisteret (cleaning services registry). This has been punishable since July 1, 2018. Check the company in the registry before you order – we have written a separate guide to legal cleaning help and the cleaning services registry.

And no, there is no tax deduction for purchasing private cleaning services from a company in Norway in 2026. If you hear that "you'll get it back on your taxes," it's not true.

How often should you deep clean?

For most homes, one to two deep cleans a year are sufficient, preferably in spring and autumn, as long as you have regular cleaning in between. Then regular cleaning functions as maintenance and deep cleaning as a reset.

You should clean more often if you have:

  • Pets that shed and wear on floors and textiles
  • Allergies in the household, where dust and mites need to be kept down
  • A lot of traffic in and out, or small children

If you live alone and are meticulous with your weekly rounds, you might manage with one thorough cleaning a year.

Can I do the deep clean myself?

Yes, much of it. But two things are worth stating clearly.

Firstly: be careful with chemicals. Never mix bleach with anything other than water. Bleach and vinegar produce chlorine gas, and bleach and ammonia or sal ammoniac produce chloramine – both are dangerous to inhale. One product at a time, in a well-ventilated room.

Secondly: acid corrodes natural stone. Vinegar, citric acid, and many limescale removers etch marble, granite, and slate and can cause dull spots. If you are removing limescale from a surface you are unsure about, keep acid away from natural stone and marble, and always test in an inconspicuous area first.

If you want to do it yourself but struggle with streaks on your windows, we have a guide to streak-free windows. If you are considering outsourcing it instead, it might be worth reading how to choose a cleaning services provider you can trust.

In short: regular cleaning keeps everyday life in check, deep cleaning catches what regular cleaning doesn't reach. Most people need both. If you know the difference, you also know when to pay for the bigger effort – and when the weekly round is enough.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a deep clean and regular cleaning?+

Regular cleaning covers the surfaces you use every week: dusting, floors, bathroom, and kitchen. A deep clean tackles what regular cleaning never reaches – behind and under furniture, inside the oven, limescale in the shower, baseboards, and door frames. A deep clean often takes three to five times longer than a regular cleaning of the same home.

How often do I need a deep clean?+

For most homes, one to two deep cleans a year are sufficient, preferably in spring and autumn, as long as you have regular cleaning in between. If you have pets, allergies, or a lot of traffic in your home, you may need it more often.

What does a deep clean cost in 2026?+

As a market estimate for 2026, a deep clean often costs 2,500–6,000 NOK for a standard apartment and more for larger homes. The price follows the hours, and legal cleaning services are well above the minimum wage of 236.54 NOK/hour. Hourly rates significantly below that are a warning sign.

Is move-out cleaning the same as a deep clean?+

No. Move-out cleaning is a deep clean with a specific goal: to deliver the home empty and ready for a new owner or landlord, according to a standard many tenants and real estate agents recognize. You do a deep clean while you live there, and you choose the scope yourself.

Can regular cleaning replace a deep clean over time?+

No. Even thorough weekly cleaning doesn't reach limescale, grease behind the stove, or dust on top of cabinets. It builds up regardless. That's why most people need a deep clean occasionally to reset.
